Love Shamrock Cookies? 6 Fun Facts about Shamrocks

Feeling lucky? At Smiley® Cookie.com, we get into the Irish spirit with St. Patrick's Day Cookies, like our green Shamrock Smiley® Cookies and Shamrock Sparkle Cookies dusted with sparkle sugar!

But do you know everything there is to know about Shamrocks? Here are a few fun facts about everyone’s favorite clover!

  1. The name Shamrock means “young clover.” Not only is it a symbol of Ireland, but it also represents Saint Patrick as a metaphor for the Holy Trinity in the Catholic Church.

  1. It’s not the three-leaf clovers that are rare, but the four-leaf ones. Apparently, there’s only one four-leaf clover in 10,000 three-leaf clovers

  1. Like Shamrock Cookies, you can eat clovers! They're rich in vitamins like Vitamin B1, Calcium, and Magnesium. But you should consult your doctor before deciding to eat them!

  1. Not only can shamrocks be beneficial to human health, but also to the earth. They attract honey bees, restore nitrogen to the soil, and can be good for earthworms.

  1. There are different types of clover. Believe it or not, they aren't all green! Different types of clovers include red, white, and zigzag, among others!

  1. Shamrocks are clovers, but not all clovers are Shamrocks. Confusing? For sure! Not even botanists can agree what species of clover is a true Shamrock.
